In the state of Georgia, children under the ages of 16 are required to attend school regularly, and can declared truant if they exceed five unexcused absences. If action is not taken by the parent after five unexcused absences, schools typically make a complaint to DFCS for education neglect, and the case may be referred to the court. A Guardian ad Litem is appointed to the case in order to advocate for the Childs best interest. Older children may also be appointed an additional attorney to assist with their defense.
